8 WAYS TO DE-STRESS WHEN WORKING AT HOME

With the rate of employment dropping and with companies finding ever new and inventive ways to exploit loopholes to pay workers less, registering as self-employed is becoming the future. Choose your own hours, no taking orders, and, perhaps most importantly, you know exactly who is to blame or thank for the financial standings.

The only thing that has marred my own experience of working from home is the fact that, compared to an actual office, my faculties are woefully under-adapted. You can also find home-based jobs on sites like Jooble. The simplest of details set a workspace vibe unconducive to productivity. Let me give you 8 tips to de-stress and relax, tried and tested.

destress work at home

1. EMPTY THE BIN DAILY

A cluttered environment begets a cluttered mind.

Don’t tell me you take out the rubbish every day. When there’s no cleaner or ‘Chief Executive Supervisor of Recyclement’ doing it for you, you allow a 3 feet high mound of scrunched up bank letters, Kit Kat wrappers, and plastic packaging to develop in your tiny tin bin. Trust me if you simply keep on top of tending it, as well as the cleanliness of the rest of the office, your levels of focus will suffer a considerable amount less.

2. TURN OFF PERSONAL PHONE

Unless your clients contact you via Snapchat then have some discipline.

An employer wouldn’t stand for you taking every opportunity to try and get to the next level of mobile game, so don’t allow yourself that temptation. I’m sure only the most wilful of you will manage to circumnavigate social networks on your work computer anyway, so don’t make the struggle any more difficult by multiplying the devices- turn it off and check it on your dinner, treat is as a treat.

3. TAKE FREQUENT SHORT BREAKS

This works for revision too!

If you slave away for hours on end then you’re inevitably going to grow wearisome of the job at hand- allowing yourself a short period to recalibrate and collect your thoughts isn’t slacking; studies demonstrate that it, in fact, makes you more efficient. Or land you some Ritalin.

4. KEEP WELL STOCKED

An empty paper-tray can sometimes be the last straw.

The already disheartened and demotivated home businessperson can be waiting for a sign from the universe to pack it in for the day. “The stapler is out of staples I’m going back to bed” never need be uttered if you simply do a restock as often as is necessary. When ink cartridges, writing pens, and tons more office supplies can be gotten online for cheap you’ve no excuse to be defeated by depleted resources.

5. SET SHORT & LONG TERM GOALS

This helps you measure progress.

Jot down some goals for the day, goals for the week, goals for the month, the year. As well as giving you quantifiable results to work towards, it helps you keep track of how far you have come.

6. WORK 9-5

Nights are for sleeping.

When you’re deciding your own hours make them fall between morning and evening. If you’re working at night you’re not going to wind down effectively enough to sleep correctly, and good businesspersons don’t get by on 5 hours of sleep. Use the ends of your day to distress and relax, get your 8 hours and you’ll be on you’re A-Game every day.

7. LEAVE WORK IN THE OFFICE

Once the home/work barrier comes down it’s gone forever.

The first thing you’re taking the laptop to the couch, next thing you’re calling clients from your phone in the car, before you know it you’re tapping out emails while you’re in bed. A place for work and a place for life, that’s the only way to keep you from falling into disarray.

8. LAY OFF THE COFFEE

You won’t miss the headaches and crashes.

“I can’t get going in the mornings without 2 coffees” is what someone with a crushing caffeine addiction would say. Get over that first hump of withdrawal and you’ll never again have to deal with the ups and downs and craving and dehydration. Do you know what’s ten times better than coffee? Fruit and water. I’m not a vegetarian or a health freak, I just don’t understand why people are pumping themselves full of something meant to help them work but it’s only stressing them out.
