  1. Always seek knowledge

A good leader is always hungry for knowledge as the person who believes to be full of knowledge and does not seek more is a failure. The more you ask the better you position yourself for success. You add value to discussions with appropriate knowledge about trends and you can refine your knowledge furthermore by asking the right questions. On top of that – you need to share your knowledge with others. As Chanakya mentioned, “He who gives up shyness in monetary dealings, in acquiring knowledge, in eating and in business, becomes happy”.

2. Understand the Needs

A good leader understands the needs of its people and of the market and the industry. If you are pushing something which is not required by the people or the organization, it will be slowly discarded. While it is really important for a good leader to understand the needs, a leader must need to differentiate between need and greed, as the later could put adverse effect where people start questioning you for greedy demands.

3. Be flexible yet be disciplined

While working with people in an organization, the good leader will always have to be flexible and accommodate to their needs whenever needed. At the same time, the leader needs to be a good disciplinarian to ensure that the base protocol, policies, and ethics have remained intact. The leader is appointed to ensure that the organization’s goals and priorities are not disturbed and the organization is moving in the right direction to achieve its mission.

Being a leader, you create soft-spoken enemies either directly or indirectly, who might not lose a chance to harm you or your organization. While dealing with such people, you need to be careful with what you are talking or how you are talking. Your words will be used against you as a weapon. This applies to confidential matters as well, when a good leader ensures how much detail has to be shared with the other person. An outspoken leader sometimes opens up its weakness or vulnerable points to others, which becomes a chance for others exploit.

6. You are answerable

Organizations maintain hierarchies where every level of the hierarchy has a reporting authority to whom they are answerable. A good leader needs to accept this fact, even if she/he is positioned on the top. A good leader always understands that she/he is answerable to the stakeholders of the organization, to external media and agencies and on top of everything to its people or employees.

7. Stay on high alert

Total alertness is a must have the quality of a good leader, as you need to stay alert about external threats and internal mismanagement. When you stay alert and be informed about the activities – you will be able to counsel with your core team or board members or stakeholders to take the right decision and be ready for any situation that may harm your organization or people.

Chanakya has always taught his followers of ethics and moral values to be successful. It is important for a good leader to ensure that the organization’s core value system is intact. It helps the organization and the members of the organization to drive towards success and in situations of calamities or difficult times, this helps the people as a light to direct all in the right way.

9. Step out at First

As a leader, you need to understand there is no golden moment to start something. In the competitive business scenario, you need to act now if you are surely confident about your approach, idea or passion. Plan your efforts, consult with an expert and work out a thoroughly defined plan and just move ahead. There is no guarantee of success, but waiting for the right moment not only delay your growth it closes your mind from new thoughts.

10. Think, Decide and Act Fast

Want to be a good leader, then you need to be a good thinker, a good decision-maker and a good implementer. Check any of the successful leader’s profile and you will find that they implemented their idea immediately. Thomas Edison failed for 1000 times but he always implemented his ideas and finally got success. You might also fail sometimes or may be many times, but unless you act on your ideas – there is no chance of success or failure.

A good leader is never born with the qualities. A leader needs to practice a lot and stick to its own laws, ethics, and morals which make her/him a good leader.
